Theodore Chao, PhD
Mathematics Educator, Researcher, Storyteller
Theodore Chao is an associate professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. His research involves engaging all students and teachers to fully see themselves as mathematical. He uses Digital Storytelling and Photovoice for mathematics teachers and students of color to create narratives that connect mathematics identities with community and family identities. Dr. Chao is currently Principal Investigator of an NSF CAREER research project exploring the ways children in urban emergent communities use Digital Mathematics Storytelling to share rich mathematical knowledge from their communities and families. In the Spring of 2022, Dr. Chao will explore the ways youth and teachers in Vietnam and Indonesia can use video stories to decolonize their mathematics learning through a Fulbright Scholar grant.
